Laduma Ngxokolo, 27, moved to London in November 2014 to attend a master’s course at Central Saint Martins, but he first graduated from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 2010 and this is where he sources his raw material. The brand, founded in 2011, is based in Cape Town. “All my icons are South African: Credo Mutwa, Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko.
The patterns and motifs of MaXhosa by Laduma are specifically inspired by traditional Xhosa beadwork. “After the Zulus, the Xhosa are the biggest cultural group in South Africa, and my brand interprets traditional Xhosa aesthetics in a modern context to capture the future African spirit. I feel extremely honoured to have been chosen as the winner who will be an ambassador for African fashion. I also feel privileged and proud to be South African and to be utilizing the resources and inspiration we possess to create a unique voice that can be understood and appreciated across many of the countries I have visited. Thanks to Vogue Talents and International Business Consortium Nigeria for joining forces to boost emerging African designers. I look forward to showcasing my work in Milan and at the Africa International Fashion Week.”
